Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Igboho, has regained his freedom from Benin Republic and has continued his journey to Germany.
He was reported to have been arrested at the Benin Republic Airport on his way to Germany and was awaiting repatriation to Nigeria where the Directorate of State Services (DSS) had declared him wanted for alleged stockpiling of arms and attempt to destabilise the country.
Igboho, whose Ibadan residence was attacked, gestapo style, and some of his supporters arrested while two were killed in a gun duel according to the DSS, has stoutly denied the allegations of arms stockpiling, insisting that he does not use firearms but traditional methods.
His release by the Benin Republic authorities is said to have been as a result of pressures from western nation governments.
A statement by Otunba Demola Edwards, the Coordinator for Information, quoting the Director of the Yoruba Nation Global Directorate, Princess Adeola Atayero Olamijulo, thanked the government and people of Benin Republic for the release of Igboho, who was said to have surrendered himself to the authorities over migration issues.
The statement by Otunba Edwards reads, “The Yoruba Nation Global Directorate has expressed its appreciation to the government and people of Benin Republic for their intervention in the release of the human rights activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho.”
Edwards said that the statement, signed and released Tuesday afternoon by Princess Olamijulo, also expressed gratitude to all those who prayed, called and participated in the release of the activist.
“She thanked all the Beninese lawyers in Cotonou who promptly stepped into the matter for their support,” pointing out that “Chief Adeyemo is on his way to his destination.
“We thank Beninese Government for standing by the Yorùbá Nation,” the statement concluded.
