Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Wednesday morning defeated Costa Rica 1-0 at the Leon Stadium to finally end a run of 7 consecutive defeats.
Esther Okoronkwo scored the winner in the first half to gift the Falcons their first win since the WAFCON quarter-final clash against Cameroon.
The match was Nigeria’s third game at the Revelation Cup tournament ongoing in Mexico. The Nigerian ladies hit Mexico for the preparatory tournament with a disappointing run of five consecutive defeats.
The Randy Waldrum tutored Super Falcons then suffered defeat to hosts Mexico and Colombia before coming out tops against Costa Rica.
From kick-off, it was Nigeria who looked brightest and duly bagged the opening goal in the 45th when Esther Okoronkwo tucked home a Jennifer Onyi cross to secure maximum points.
A huge relief for under-fire Super Falcons manager Randy Waldrum and the Falcons who held on for a 1-0 win over fellow World-Cup bound Costa Rica ladies.
Despite the win, the Falcons are eliminated from the tournament and will head back to their various clubs pending call-up for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in July.
