Two persons who reportedly consumed a locally-distilled alcoholic beverage, popularly known as “Ogogoro”, have been confirmed dead in Ugieda, South Ibie in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo, while three others remain in hospital.

An eyewitness, Mr Lukman Rilwan, said the five persons complained bitterly of stomach ache after consuming the local gin.

“After they drank the Ogogoro, they began complaining of stomach ache, unfortunately the two died while three are currently hospitalised.”

The Aidonigie of South Ibie, Alhaji Kelvin Danisi and the Chairman of Etsako West local government, Mr Yesufu Busari, who confirmed the incident, said a ban would be placed on the illicit gin.

“I got report that two people have died and three others are still critically ill at the hospital.

“So we are doing everything to make sure that such things don’t happen again. I have already summoned a meeting of all those that are into the sale of alcohol and we are going to place a ban on the illicit gin,” the traditional ruler said.

Busari said the council would liaise with relevant stakeholders, especially dealers of the local gin, to educate and enlighten the people on current happenings.

He appealed to people of the council to desist from consuming the illicit gin.
