Umahi’s ouster: All eyes on INEC; We’ve not yet received judgement, PDP’s nominees – Commission

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that once they receive the Certified True Copy of the judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja that sacked David Umahi as Governor of Ebonyi State alongside his Deputy, Chief Kelechi Igwe and 17 members of the state House of Assembly, it will convene a meeting immediately to take action on the verdict.

Umahi, Igwe and the 17 state legislators were sacked for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and retaining their positions.

Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Commission, told Global Patriot Newspapers (GPNews) online that as at the close of work on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, the day the judgement was given, the Commission had not received the Certified True Copy of the judgement.

Umahi had, after the judgement ousting him, boasted, in his reaction, that nobody could remove him as Governor and that he remains the Chief Executive of the state and would not vacate the office for anyone. He also described the judgement of the Court presided over by Honorable Justice Inyang Ekwo as a sham, accusing the judge of doing a hatchet job.

Mr. Oyekanmi, however, stressed that INEC has a record of obedience to court rulings and that the Commission was yet to receive the Certified True Copy of the judgement which would determine their next line of action.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has already called on INEC to immediately withdraw the Certificates of Return given to Umahi, Igwe and the members of the House of Assembly that defected to APC with Umahi and issue their nominees for Governor and Deputy Governor, Iduma Igariwey and Fred Udogwu respectively, the certificates of return, while immediately setting machinery in motion to conduct by-elections in the constituencies of the affected legislators.

Mr. Oyekanmi also said that as at the close of work Tuesday, the INEC, also, had not received the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu’s letter conveying to it the names of the party’s nominees for the positions of Governor and Deputy Governor, stressing that action of any sort would also be dependent on the official receipt of the letter as well as the Certified True Copy of the Federal High Court judgement.

He said that a lot would depend on what happens tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9, 2022, especially as regards the expected documents.
