The Senator, representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has barred 223 students under his scholarship scheme in the zone from applying for Federal Government’s students loan in the state.
The students from various institutions in the country are from 58 communities in his constituency.
While commending the President for introducing the students’ loan in the country, Umeh said it will be unfair to allow those under his scholarship to apply for the loan, adding that the loan is for people without help.
He said when the President presented the Bill, he took it upon himself with like minds in the Senate to make sure it was given accelerated passage.
Umeh said Tinubu had introduced wonderful ideas in his administration that would benefit the citizens, adding that whatever would take people from poverty must be applauded, noting that the students’ loan was one of such programmes from the President.
He said, “let me thank President Tinubu for introducing the students’ loan to help them accomplish their goals in life.
“Anyone of you benefitting from my scholarship is barred from applying for the loan. You will repay that one, but this one is free. Allow those who have nobody to help them apply for that one,” Umeh said.
The scholarship programme, held at the popular CANA House in Awka, saw 37 million naira distributed to the 223 students in the Central senatorial zone
Umeh, while addressing the beneficiaries , said when you train someone in school, the person could become the Governor, President or some other thing in life.
He said the education could take people out of different crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping and other vices in the society.
The scholarship selection process, described as painstaking, involved the clergy, traditional rulers, the Presidents -General and other stakeholders.
Umeh’s Foundation had been providing scholarships for 17 years, while over 430 students have become Lawyers, Doctors, Engineers, Surveyors and graduates in other fields, including those with PhDs.
He encouraged the beneficiaries to aim high, while sharing inspiring stories of past beneficiaries who had excelled in their fields of endeavour.
He assured the students that his support would continue and even increase in the future.
This initiative was part of his constituency project, demonstrating his commitment to honest service and the development of his people.
