Vacant Bayelsa East Senate seat: Group drums support for ex-Dep. Gov., Ebebi

Peremobowei Ebebi

A coalition of support groups on Thursday threw its weight behind Peremowei Ebebi for the Bayelsa West Senate seat vacated by Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Two Senate seats, Bayelsa Central, previously occupied by Gov Douye Diri and Bayelsa West formerly occupied by Ewhrudjakpo are vacant following their emergence as Governor and Deputy Governor.

It will be recalled that the Supreme Court had on Feb. 13, held that the APC Deputy Governor-elect, Degi Ereminyo, submitted forged documents which made him and Governor-elect, David Lyon, ineligible to contest the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in compliance with the judgment, on Feb. 14 issued a Certificate of Return to the PDP candidate, Duoye Diri, who has since been sworn in.

Although INEC is yet to announce a date for the bye-election for the vacant senate seats the race for the seats has commenced with ex-Gov Seriake Dickson eyeing the seat having indicated interest on the PDP platform.

The groups, the, Sagbama/Ekeremor chapter of David Lyon Youth Network, and three other groups endorsed Ebebi for Bayelsa West Senatorial seat at a press conference after the endorsement rally in Yenagoa.

They said they were rooting for Ebebi’s candidature owing to his track record as former Speaker, Bayelsa House of Assembly, Deputy Governor where thousands of lives were touched,

The groups led by Mr Zerubebel Daniel, Coordinator of David Lyon Youth Network explained that there is no better person than Ebebi for the senate seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They recounted the level of suffering the people of Bayelsa went through in ex-Gov Seriake Dickson’s administration resulting to the ouster of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration at the Nov. 16, 2019 governorship poll.

The group noted that it will be another form of slavery if ex-Gov Dickson, who led the PDP and lost the Governorship by a large margin, is allowed to go to the senate.

They called on the people of the Bayelsa West to jettison party affiliations and reject the PDP’s Dickson like they did during the governorship election.

They also called on the APC to consider Ebebi for the Senate ticket, describing him as the man with the political clout and pedigree to defeat Dickson even in his home town.

Thousands of APC supporters from Bayelsa West Senatorial zone attended the endorsement meeting. that preceded the press conference.
