West Orange African Heritage Organization, New Jersey, USA holds “Men Who Cook” fundraiser

The West Orange African Heritage Organization (WOAHO), New Jersey, United States of America (USA) is organizing its annual fundraiser on Sunday, June 11, 2023.

The program, “Men Who Cook,” will hold at West Orange High School, 51 Conforti Avenue., West Orange, NJ 07052 from 1PM till 5PM and all are invited.

According to a notice by Althia Tweiten, Committee Chairman and Yvonne Nambe, President, all proceeds from the event will go towards scholarships for West Orange High School Seniors. The ticket is $45 for adults and $15 for children.

WOAHO, founded in 1999, according to information on its website, www.woaho.org, “is a non-profit 501c3 organization that promotes the cultural distinction of West Orange residents of African descent.”

It is “a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting academic student achievement, raising awareness of African Heritage, culture and tradition and advocating for equity and justice.”

It was founded by a group of people of African descent with the vision of an organization that would have as its focal points the promotion and increase in the involvement of residents of African descent in the affairs of their town and communities; the promotion of a richer sense of community, the broadening of the scope of issues concerning their community and insuring that residents of African descent are given equitable opportunities to excel in their classrooms, businesses and professional fields and in their communities.

The group achieves its mission through organizational initiatives such as Food Drive, School Supply Drive, Toy Drive; through its committees – Membership, Scholarship and Tutoring, and through events and activities such as Kwanzaa Celebration, “Men Who Cook” Fundraiser, Black History Month Celebration, Women’s History Month, Juneteenth, First Friday mixers, Meet-up groups and through participating in township-related events/programming.

​The general membership meetings hold every third Wednesday of March, June, September and December from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. Membership is open to residents and businesses of West Orange and surrounding communities from all walks of life who are active in the community and are committed to enriching the quality of the lives of people in West Orange and benefits of membership, they say, are numerous.
