World Cup: Richarlison, the star as Brazil defeat Serbia 2-0

Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison was the star of the show as Brazil secured a 2-0 win over Serbia in their first game at the 2022 World Cup.

Serbia lined up for the encounter with a 3-4-2-1 formation but in reality, it was more of a 5-4-0-1 and it worked effectively until Richarlison struck his first of the game in the 62nd minute.

He pounced on a rebound from a Vinicuis Junior shot to gift Brazil a deserved lead in the Group G encounter on Thursday night.

In the 72nd minute, the forward sensationally bagged his brace to extend Brazil’s lead and cut-off Serbia’s slim hopes of a comeback.

Brazil were made to labour hard for the win by a disciplined Serbian defence backed by terrific goalkeeping from Milinkovic-Savic.

An attack minded Brazil starting XI could not create numerous goalscoring opportunities in the first half despite controlling all departments of the game.

To ensure it finished level at the break, Milinkovic-Savic was quick off his line to bravely save from Vinicius’s feet in the 27th minute of play.

Minutes later, Raphinha swaggered infield from the right, played a one-two with Paqueta but his sidefoot went tamely to Milinkovic-Savic from about 15 yards.

Raphina was again presented with an opportunity to open the scoring but again, Milinkovic-Savic brilliantly saved to delay the Samba dance.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 62nd minute, Vinicius Junior crashed a surprise first-time shot that was wonderfully saved by Milinkovic-Savic, low to his left, but Richarlison beat Pavlovic to the rebound and tapped it into the empty net.

Richarlison will produce even another beautiful acrobatic effort to double Brazil’s lead 11 minutes later.

Vinicuis Junior delivered a well worked pass for Richarlison, the forward flicked the ball up in the air, then twisted to slap an acrobatic volley into the bottom corner for a magnificent goal.

It finished Brazil 2-0 Serbia. The Samba Boys lead the Group G standings after the opening games while Switzerland occupy second spot after a 1-0 defeat of Cameroon.
