World Cup: Talking points from Ivory Coast’s late win over Ecuador

Ivory Coast kicked off their World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador after substitute Amad Diallo scored a last-minute winner in Philadelphia.

The Elephants had to withstand heavy pressure from Ecuador, who hit the woodwork twice in the first half, before finding a way through in the closing moments. The result gave the former African champions a perfect start in Group E.

Amad Proves His Value Off The Bench

The biggest talking point was the impact of Amad Diallo.

Many fans were surprised when the Manchester United winger was left on the bench by coach Emerse Fae. However, the decision worked out perfectly as Amad came on in the second half and changed the game.

With only a minute of normal time remaining, Wilfried Singo burst down the right wing and delivered a low cross into the box. Amad arrived at the right moment and calmly guided the ball past goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.

The goal underlined his importance to the team and showed that he can deliver in the biggest moments.

Ecuador Left To Regret Missed Opportunities

Ecuador were the better side in the opening stages and will wonder how they failed to score.

John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar during an impressive first-half display. Enner Valencia also had a chance as Ecuador repeatedly troubled the Ivory Coast defence.

At that stage, Ecuador looked the more likely team to win. However, their inability to convert chances allowed Ivory Coast to stay in the match.

As the game went on, Ecuador’s early dominance faded and they paid the price for not making their superiority count.

Ivory Coast Show The Spirit Of Champions

Champions often find a way to win even when they are not at their best, and Ivory Coast did exactly that.

The former AFCON winners struggled to create clear chances early on but remained patient and organised. Elye Wahi hit the crossbar in the second half, while the introductions of Amad Diallo and Ange-Yoan Bonny brought fresh energy to the attack.

Instead of settling for a draw, the Elephants kept pushing forward and were rewarded in the final minute.

The victory ended a 12-year wait for a World Cup win and could be a huge boost to their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

Ivory Coast may not have produced their finest performance, but their resilience and belief helped them secure a valuable three points when it mattered most.
