
YOUTH leaders across tertiary institutions in Lagos state met on Saturday to discuss matters that affect Nigerians and the lacuna between the young and the older generations in the country.
Speaking, the coordinator of SYNERGY, a leadership coalition, Dr. Adeola Oloyede, said “the youth cannot leave the political control to the elders alone, else the ability to become true leaders in the future might be difficult for us all”.
He, however, affirmed that the elders cannot be totally wiped off for the youth to take over, “and that is why we need to synergize with leaders that mean well for the country in order to make it a win-win situation”.
While encouraging the youths which comprise of the Presidents, Secretaries and Speakers of students’ unions across all tertiary institutions in Lagos state, Dr. Oloyede added “the best way to make leaders is to invest in people and reshape the minds of our youths”.
Advocating the need for the youth to take top positions in the state and the country at large, the President – Elect of Lagos State University Students’ Union, Comrade Uthman Badmus, called on all well meaning Nigerians to make the next President of Nigeria come from Lagos state.
Comrade Badmus, who spoke at the sideline of the 2 – day youth leadership summit in Lagos, argued that aside the fact that Lagos is a mini – Nigeria, the state has also contributed more to the development of Nigeria especially in terms of human development capacity and revenue generation.
“Producing a thorough Lagos – bred politician is the only way to appreciate the commercial capital for being supportive and accommodative,” the students’ leader added.
Speaking on the need of youth alliance and progressive political leaders, Mr. Ahmmed Olaufe, a resource person, urged the youth leaders to know their worth and maintain the core societal values.
Olaufe further analysed the scientific and theoretical processes of reasoning, laying emphasis of making the right choices always.
Making his contribution, the Students’ Representative of the University of Lagos, Comrade Olawale Adesanya, appealed to the youth not to take directionless decisions any longer. He declared the readiness of people of like minds to coerce formidable combination to take leadership.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the group, Opeyemi Eniola, has disclosed that the long – term ‘SYNERGY’ programme is to reshape the minds of youths across the nation.
Other speakers include the human rights activist cum politician, Comrade Ayodele Adewale.
