Akwa Ibom Police arrest suspected armed robber after businessman is attacked

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected member of an armed robbery gang involved in a recent attack on a businessman. The arrest was made during a routine ‘stop and search’ patrol conducted by police operatives at Ekom Iman roundabout.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, the suspect, identified as Ukpono Ekopntak, was apprehended following a report from the businessman, who was robbed of his valuables while on a business trip to Aba, Abia State.

The statement detailed that upon receiving the report, the police operatives quickly responded and managed to arrest Ekopntak, although other members of the gang managed to escape. The police are actively pursuing the remaining suspects, and two motorbikes were recovered from the scene of the crime.

Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, she said, has reassured residents of the command’s dedication to eradicating crime in the state. He also issued a stern warning to individuals involved in criminal activities or clandestine groups, urging them to desist or face the full force of the law.

The police continue their efforts to ensure the safety and security of citizens across Akwa Ibom State.

Her words: “The Akwa Ibom Police command in its expanded efforts towards combating crime and criminal elements in the state arrested an armed robbery suspect.

“The Police operatives while on routine stop and search patrol at Ekom Iman roundabout was approached by a businessman, who was robbed of his valuables while embarking on a business trip to Aba.

“Immediately, operatives of the command gave the suspects a hot chase and one Ukpono Ekopntak was arrested while others are still at large. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing members of the syndicate. Two motorbikes were recovered from the scene of the crime.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Waheed Ayilara has reassured Akwa Ibomites of the command’s unwavering commitment to rid the state of criminal minded elements.

“The CP also sounds note of warning to all those belonging to clandestine groups to turn a new leaf and exit those groups as the command will not give them room to thrive.”
