2023 African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, was the star of the match as Nigeria’s Super Eagles earned an important 2-0 win against Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on matchday five.
The Super Eagles went into the game at Stade Amahoro in Kigali needing a win to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Osimhen stepped up with two first-half goals to give Nigeria all three points.
The Galatasaray striker opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing a lovely free-kick cross from Ademola Lookman. He scored his second goal just before half-time, cleverly chipping the Rwandan goalkeeper in the 45th minute to reach 25 goals for Nigeria.
Osimhen’s two goals in the first half were enough, as Nigeria controlled the second half to protect their lead. The victory moves the Super Eagles to six points in Group C and gives them fresh hope of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The win is also a great start for new head coach Eric Chelle, who recently took charge of the team. Nigeria will now aim for another good result when they face Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday, March 25, in their next qualifier.
