Lookman strike sends Atlético Madrid into Champions League last Four

Ademola Lookman emerged as the match-winner as Atlético Madrid progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a 3–2 aggregate triumph over FC Barcelona on Tuesday night.

Although Atlético fell to a 2–1 defeat in the second leg, Lookman’s vital first-half finish ensured Diego Simeone’s side did just enough to advance, reaching the last four of the competition for the first time since the 2016–17 season.

The Super Eagles forward continues his impressive European run, climbing to third on Nigeria’s all-time Champions League scorers list with eight goals—only behind Obafemi Martins (9) and Victor Osimhen (16).

Barcelona started brightly in front of their fans, opening the scoring in the fourth minute through Lamine Yamal. Their dominance continued as Ferran Torres added a second in the 24th minute with a well-taken strike to bring the tie level on aggregate.

Atlético responded with purpose, and in the 31st minute, Marcos Llorente spearheaded a quick break before setting up Lookman, who finished with composure to restore the visitors’ aggregate lead.

Barcelona believed they had found another equaliser early in the second half when Torres struck again, but the effort was ruled out after a VAR check confirmed an offside in the build-up.

Lookman’s evening ended in the 66th minute when he was replaced by Nicolás González, while Atlético also introduced Álex Baena to reinforce their setup. Barcelona, chasing the game, brought on Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski in search of a late turnaround.

The contest swung further in Atlético’s favour in the 80th minute when Eric García was sent off for a last-man challenge on Alexander Sørloth.

With a numerical edge, Atlético Madrid stayed organised in the closing stages, successfully holding off Barcelona’s late push to seal qualification for the semi-finals.
