Peter Obi asks Tinubu to account for ₦15.8trn fuel subsidy savings, over $100bn loans
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to explain how his administration has spent the money saved from fuel subsidy removal and funds borrowed since taking office.
Obi made the call in a statement titled “Good Day, Mr. President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability,” following Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom State.
He congratulated the President on spending a night in a state outside Lagos and Abuja, while urging him to visit other parts of the country and engage with Nigerians.
The former Anambra State Governor asked Tinubu to explain to Nigerians what his government has done with the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal, the over $100 billion borrowed and the additional revenue generated through taxes.
He also questioned how the increased government revenue, which the administration said had exceeded its target last year, had improved the lives of Nigerians.
Obi said Nigerians deserved to know how many people had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been built.
He also demanded answers on improvements in electricity supply and the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.
According to him, Nigerians deserve clear answers on how public funds have been used and the results achieved by the government.
Obi said accountability, transparency and measurable improvements in citizens’ lives would form the foundation of the New Nigeria he hopes to build.
He ended his statement by expressing confidence that a new Nigeria is possible.
