Buhari tasks laureates on policies generation to transform Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja urged Laureates of the Nigeria National Order of Merit (NNOM) Award to generate effective policies that would transform the country.

The president, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha gave the advice at the 10th Annual Forum of the Laureates of NNOM award.

The forum was organised by the Governing Board of the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA) with the theme “Governance Reforms and Security in Nigeria.’’

Buhari noted that the forum permited individuals to collectively harness the intellectual prowess of other laureates and target groups to arrive at a significant contribution to national development.

He said that Nigeria was presently faced with the task of attracting foreign and local investors to invest in the country to boost the economy.

“It is my hope that the ideas generated from the discourse of this year’s 10th annual forum will assist in creating awareness on how the nation could use the pool of knowledge of this gathering to propel itself into the league of developed world economies,

“I have no doubt that outstanding recommendations shall be produced at the end of the forum that will help policy makers to identify key activities required to transform our great nation,

“We are faced with the urgent task of attracting investors to have confidence in our economic plans by providing the Nigerian people with qualitative and functional policies,’’ he said.

The president said that his belief that Nigeria had all the required intellectuals to make this nation great again have been reinforced with the gathering of the scholars.

“I am looking forward to receiving a copy of the outcome of your discussions, which I am sure would go a long way in providing the required solutions for good governance, reforms and security in the nation.

“We need to act fast to implement ideas which impact would be felt in the short, medium terms by our citizenry,’’ Buhari said.

Mustapha, represented by Mr William Alo, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) in his remarks commended the laureates for the annual forum.

Mustapha noted that the Order of Merit was instituted to bestow honour on outstanding individuals who had achieved astonishing feats in their field.

He said that the laureates had ingeniously provided an annual forum through which they liaise and network with public and private entities to point out pressing national issues and provide sustainable solutions.

The SGF stated that Nigeria needed radical increase in the degree of enthusiasm of its citizens.

“Our country needs patriotic citizens making outstanding feats in their various endeavours, be it in the military, hospitality industry, commerce, and academic among others,

“Nigeria has to intensify its productivity in order to assert itself as the giant of Africa and protector of the black race,’’ he said.
