The Borno state Governor Hon. Kashim Shettima of Borno state has described the country’s fallen heroes as the pillars of the nation, pointing out that most of them lay down their lives for the unity and progress of the country.
Governor Shettima disclosed Friday while speaking at the occasion of Armed Force Remembrance Day and Emblem Week held at the Government House Maiduguri.
As part of the Week, the Borno state chapter of the Nigerian Legion has realized N5.45 million.
The governor, who was represented at the occasion by his deputy, Alhaji Usman Maman Durkwa said the gallant men and officers of the Armed force put their lives on the line to restore peace in Borno, the North-East and the country at large, hence the need to pray for them and assist them and the families they left behind and their surviving colleagues who suffered permanent disabilities.
While donating the sum of N2.65 million to the legions, the governor called on the commissioners, local government chairmen, corporate organizations and individuals to donate to their course.
Speaking earlier, the chairman, Borno state legion, Alhaji Aliyu Mustapha urged the governments at different levels and corporate bodies to consider employing their members, as most of them are suffering without jobs to do.
He also called on the state government to fulfil its pledge of providing them an 18 seater bus and Hilux vehicles to ease the transportation problems of their members.
Highlight of the occasion was the laying of wreaths by the Borno state Deputy governor, the state Chief Judge, Theater Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, GOC, Borno state commissioner of Police and the chairman of the legion.
