Hashidu, first Gombe civilian governor passes on;  Speaker Dogara mourns

The first Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Abubakar Habu Hashidu, the Matawalin Dukku, has passed on at the age of 74 years, Friday morning after a protracted illness.

Our correspondent gathered that Hashidu died in his home around 10:30 am in Gombe, leaving behind a wife, eight children, fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

News of the death of the elder state man filtered into the air around 12 noon. Hashidu was Governor of Gombe State from May 29th 1999 and handed over on May 29th, 2013.

Alhaji Abubakar Habu Hashidu was one time Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources during the administration of former Military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

He was also a one-time Commissioner of Agric in the old Bauchi State and Managing Director, Upper Benue River Basin Authority.

As at the time of filing this report, his remain was being assembled for the funeral prayer according to Islamic injunction at the Gombe Central Mosque, Emir’s Palace, Gombe.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has commiserated with the government and people of Gombe State over the demise of Alhaji Hashidu.

In a statement, the Speaker described the former governor’s death as a huge loss to Gombe state and the country as a whole.

He said the late Alhaji Hashidu was a visionary and exemplary leader who gave priority to the welfare of the people and laid the foundation for the enviable development taking place now in Gombe state.

“As the first Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Hashidu had brought to bear his wealth of experience in laying the foundation for the development of the then new state and distinguished himself as a man of vision and  a pace setter; no wonder his four year tenure witnessed execution of people oriented projects and programmes as well as remarkable promotion of harmony and peaceful coexistence among the diverse people of the state.

“He was a complete gentleman and  an accomplished public servant who showed uncommon love for the state and the people, as symbolized by his constant preaching of  peace, unity and well-being of the people as well as engagement with stakeholders during his service years  as a minister, state chief executive and even after leaving office”.
