The Imo House of Assembly has urged the state government to direct its Commissioner for Works to grade the roads in New Owerri and construct appropriate drainages to control flooding.
The House also urged the government to construct standard roads with street lights in New Owerri to beautify that part of the state capital.
The House made the call on Tuesday, at plenary, following a motion by Mr. Clinton Amadi (LP-Owerri Municipal) who noted that Gov. Hope Uzodimma has rehabilitated over 100 roads in the Owerri municipal.
He, however, observed that some areas of the municipal such as Areas A, L, M and N, Imo Housing, as well as Site and Services, in the World Bank area are still dilapidated.
Amadi stated that the roads are strewn with serious erosion and gullies, which made the roads impassable during the rainy season, endangering the lives of children and motorists who plied the routes.
He also noted that the Imo Housing Estate and Imo Housing Estate extension had no electricity due to lack of transformers, flooding and high level of insecurity.
He, therefore, urged the house to urge the state government to direct the commissioner for works to address the affected areas by grading the roads and constructing appropriate drainages to control floods.
The lawmaker also called for the construction of standard roads with street lights to beautify the area.
He went on to urge the state governor to direct the Commissioner for Public Utilities and Homeland Security to provide transformers to ensure adequate power supply.
Amadi also called for the construction of a suitable police station to curb the menace of criminals, who took advantage of the lack of illumination to terrorise the people living in the area.
Supporting the motion, Mr. Chisom Ojukwu (APC-Nkwere) noted that the World Bank area road challenge needed to be urgently addressed.
He added that plying that route had become “traumatic” for people residing in that area because of constant wear and tear on their vehicles.
He appealed to the governor to tackle the challenge to ensure the entire capital and neighbouring communities have perfect roads.
Speaking in support, the Majority Leader, Mr. Kanayo Onyemaechi (Owerri West) noted that the construction had been awarded to a contractor, who had failed to complete it despite being mobilised.
Following more contributions and votes in favour of the motion, the Speaker, Mr. Chike Olemgbe (Ihitte Uboma) ruled in favour of the prayers of the motion.
He directed the Clerk to convey the resolutions to the office of the governor and other relevant ministries.
