Kuje Prison attack: DCP Abba Kyari in our custody – NCS Spokesperson.

The spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Umar Abubakar, has described as fake and misleading reports that DCP Abba Kyari has escaped from its custody.

This followed Tuesday’s attack on Kuje Prison, where the suspended deputy commissioner of Police is being held in custody, by suspected terrorists.

Hours after the attack, reports emerged on various media platforms that Abba Kyari who is standing trial for drug trafficking amongst others had escaped from custody.

Reacting to the reports, the NCS Spokesperson said, “That is not true. Abba Kyari is hale and hearty and still in our Custody.”

The attack on Tuesday July 5, 2022 lasted for hours with the attackers shooting and unleashing explosives on the correctional facility.

Despite the stiff resistance from military personnel and NCS officers on duty, about 600 inmates reportedly escaped from custody as confirmed by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Shuaibu Belgore. Some of those who escaped are said to have been rearrested.

The Kuje Prison attack on Tuesday as well as the attack on a Presidential advance team in Katsina state, commentators say, are pointers to the level of insecurity in the country.
