The Africana Institute of Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey, United States of America (USA) is organizing a Malcolm X Memorial Bus Ride to Hartsdale, New York, USA, on Friday, May 19, 2023.

The trip, according to a notice by the Institute, “includes a bus ride to the gravesite of Malcolm X to participate in the annual memorial ceremony” of the iconic activist with hundreds of others “in tribute to the legacy of Malcolm’s fight for the humanity of People of African descent.”

The bus leaves Essex County College at 8:30 AM and returns to the College at approximately 3:30 PM. The Institute alerted that the seating on the bus is limited and people would be accomodated on a first come, first served basis.

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little and at a point known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965), was a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and racial justice. He was assassinated on February 21, 1965 in New York City.

He was posthumously honored with Malcolm X Day, which is commemorated in various cities in the United States, while hundreds of streets and schools as well as other historical sites and monuments are named or have been renamed in his honour.

The memorial program in his honor, started by the late activist’s sister, has been going on for 58 years and continues to gather momentum in recognition of the lasting impact made by Malcom X, globally but especially among the African American community.

All who are interested in undertaking the memorial and historic trip to his gravesite as part of this year’s memorial event, are welcome to contact the Africana Institute of ECC, Newark, New Jersey, via email at africana@essex.edu or by phone at 9738773140.
