The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has begun the speedy completion and commissioning of projects in order to improve the living conditions of the people of the Niger Delta region.
Speaking at the commissioning of a N130 million residential quarters for police personnel in Port Harcourt on Monday, the Acting Managing Director/CEO of the Commission, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said this is vital “in the face of recent security and economic challenges and incidents in the Niger Delta.
She added: “I believe it is incumbent upon us to continue to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that these challenges are resolved and our people begin to move away from destructive to constructive engagement.”
Mrs. Semenitari said the project was part of a broad-based partnership with the Nigeria Police Force to add value to their effort at improving regional security, adding that as an interventionist agency, the NDDC had a responsibility to make sure that those who take care of our safety were provided with befitting and comfortable accommodation.
She affirmed that the commissioning was “a worthy testimony of the commission’s new commitment to the speedy and credible completion of projects,” adding that the NDDC will work hard to complete ongoing projects “so that the people of the Niger Delta region will enjoy the benefits of their immense contributions to the wealth and well-being of Nigeria.
“This is what we owe them. This is what we owe ourselves, as custodians of their collective aspiration,” Mrs. Semenitari said.
The NDDC boss commended the contractors of the project and called on all NDDC contractors to emulate them. “We do have examples of contractors who do their work diligently. This is one of them,” she said.
Responding, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Kimo, commended the NDDC for its continued support for the police in the region, saying: “I thank the NDDC, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, and I promise that the residential quarters will be well utilized for the benefit of the senior police officers.”
The police chief said that NDDC’s contribution to the welfare of the police officers would serve as a big source of encouragement and motivation. “This is a dream come true,” he declared.
The NDDC is also building barracks for the Nigerian Police Special Protection Unit, Base 6, at Omagwa in the outskirts of Port Harcourt. The complex contains an administrative building and six blocks of residential quarters.
