An association of alumni of Abia State University, Zenith Environmental and Social Protection Network (ZESPRONET), has started raising funds for more corporate social responsibility projects, with its international President, Dr. Boris Emeka Oji, saying that his members have a blueprint for the transformation of the South-East geo-political zone of the country.

United States of America (USA)-based Dr. Oji, who spoke at the association’s 2022 Fundraising Dinner held in Abuja, Nigeria, on Saturday, August 13, 2022, said that members of ZESPRONET, who, in November last year handed over an N80,000,000 (Eighty Million Naira) post-graduate hostel, to Abia State University, had extensively brainstormed on how to turn around the fortunes of the South-East zone of the country.

The multiple award-winning medical practitioner, who confirmed that the ultra-modern post-graduate hostel, which they built and donated to their Alma mater was commissioned by Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, stressed that members of the association, in Nigeria and in the Diaspora, have the know how to galvanise the governors of the five states of the zone into making the region a model in the country.

He said, “For instance, we have the knowledge base to encourage the governors into focusing and pushing for interconnectivity of the gas pipelines from Abia State through Imo State to the major business centres of Abia, Nnewi, Onitsha, Enugu and Abakaliki that will bring businesses back to these cities, increase internally generated revenue and reduce reliance on the monthly allocations from the Federal Government.”

According to him, the key is for the governors to commit to working together to exploit the enormous economic potential of the zone, irrespective of party differences, for the good of the people. He said that ZESPRONET will willingly offer any or all the governors the blueprints already available with their think tank group in this, as in other regards, all aimed at developing the area.

Dr. Boris said further that the six-year-old association, besides donating the post graduate hostel to Abia State University, had in the last two years, 2020 and 2021, sponsored an award for the best graduating female medical student in Imo State University College of Medicine, which they intend to sustain. He said they also sponsored messages/jingles in radio stations in the five South East zone states for six weeks at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as part of their contribution to the effort to combat the disease.

He said, however, that in their reckoning, their most outstanding achievement so far, has been the inculcation of the spirit of giving and charity in their members, which has made ZESPRONET “a lesson in charity, service to one’s Alma mater and community, corporate social responsibility and leadership based on our conviction even when no one else believed in our journey.”

The well attended 2022 Fund Raising Dinner had Prof. Uche Ikonne, former Vice Chancellor of Abia State University and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Gubernatorial Candidate for Abia State as Chairman, Mr. Obo Effanga of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as Guest Speaker and other distinguished guests, like Prof. Onyemachi Maxwell Ogbulu, Vice Chancellor, Abia State University and Prof. Uche U. Chukwumaeze SAN, Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, in attendance.

Held at the Centenary Hall of Ibeto Hotels, Abuja, the event also served as the flag off ceremony for the association’s Lavatory and Tree Planting Projects for Imo State University, Owerri and Abia State University, Uturu.
