Overcoming your tendency to live for the approval of others By Fr. Peter Iwuala

Living for the approval of others is a common struggle that many people face, often beginning in childhood and continuing into adulthood. This tendency can stem from a deep-seated desire for acceptance and validation, leading to a life that feels dictated by external opinions rather than personal values and goals.

To overcome this tendency, it is essential to cultivate self-awareness and understand the motivations behind seeking approval. Recognizing the moments when we seek validation can be the first step toward liberation. Are we conforming to societal expectations, or are we aligning our actions with our true selves? Asking these questions can help us identify patterns in our behavior and set the stage for change.

Building self-esteem is crucial in this journey. Engaging in self-reflection and embracing personal achievements, no matter how small, can reinforce a sense of self-worth that is not reliant on others’ opinions. Additionally, surrounding ourselves with supportive individuals who appreciate us for who we are, rather than for our adherence to their expectations, can foster a healthier mindset.

Practicing self-compassion is another essential strategy. Treating ourselves with kindness during moments of doubt or failure helps to create a resilient mindset. It is important to remember that everyone makes mistakes and that our worth is not diminished by the mistakes. Embracing our imperfections allows for a more authentic existence, one that prioritizes personal fulfillment over external validation.

Ultimately, living authentically requires courage. It means letting go of the need for approval and embracing our individuality. While it may be challenging to break free from the desire for validation, the rewards of living authentically—greater self-acceptance, inner peace, and genuine relationships—are undoubtedly worth the effort. Overcoming the tendency to seek approval from others is a personal journey, but with perseverance and practice, it is entirely achievable.

Always have it in your mind that fake life does not last. Therefore, be your true self!
