Mr. Sam Ohuabunwa says the country’s protracted insecurity and socio-economic challenges is being worsened by increased level of poverty among Nigerians.
He said this when he met with stalwarts of the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) in Minna on Thursday to make his intention known to them.
He is contesting the position of the president in the 2023 presidential election.
Ohuabunwa disclosed that according to the World Bank classification, 71 per cent of Nigerians were living in poverty and only 10 per cent of Nigerians were rich and could make ends meets.
He said that the way forward in addressing the menace was for the country to have an enlightened, visionary and competent leader to lift the country out of the situation.
“Nigeria needs a leader with competence, good character to lead the country on the path of righteousness. That leader is me. I have been motivated to present myself to run for the presidency.
“It doesn’t matter if there will be zoning under my party or not, though it is good to rotate presidency to show inclusiveness and show love that we care for each other,” he said.
He said that poverty, joblessness, injustice and slack enforcement of law and order were major causes of insecurity in the country, promising to create an enabling environment to innovate and thrive in businesses.
Ohuabunwa added that creating enabling environment for investment to flow would lead to creation of business opportunities, projects, programmes and wealth which would drive away poverty.
He, however, said that for PDP to be able to win the 2023 presidential election, it needs to maintain a righteous move in doing the right thing at the right time in the right way in selection of the party’s leadership.
Responding, Mr. Tanko Beji, PDP Chairman in Niger, described Ohuabunwa as the first person to inform the state of his presidential ambition and pledged the state party’s support.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ohuabunwa also visited former Military President, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for consultations.
