Rights activist, Inibehe Effiong, slams Akwa Ibom Governor for defending Tinubu’s economic handling

Rights activist, Barrister Inibehe Effiong, has lambasted Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for defending President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s economic challenges.

The Governor, in a statement made on Tuesday, May 21, during his meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, stated that President Tinubu did not create the country’s current economic problems and that he deserved support to overcome them.

Governor Eno further praised Tinubu’s efforts in his first two years in office, calling them “wonderful” and citing progress in addressing the inherited issues. Eno said, “President Tinubu didn’t create the problem we are in right now… I believe he is doing his best, and he should be supported to finish strong.”

However, Barrister Effiong, who also hails from Akwa Ibom State, sharply disagreed with the Governor’s remarks. He took to his social media handle, where he responded with a single word: “Madness,” expressing his frustration with the Governor’s stance. Effiong’s comment quickly garnered attention, with many agreeing with his view that the Governor’s defence of President Tinubu seemed misplaced given the widespread economic hardship Nigerians are currently facing.

The Governor also used the opportunity of his visit to the presidential Villa to highlight his achievements in Akwa Ibom State, such as developments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He went on to say that his administration was now focused on major infrastructure projects aimed at positioning Akwa Ibom as a leading economic and tourism hub in the region.
