T.Y. Danjuma visits Buhari in Aso Villa; Work closely with PTF on COVID-19, President urges Governors

President Buhari holds Virtual meeting with some Governors led by Chairman Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi, in State House on 18th May 2020

Abuja, May 18, 2020

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed doors with retired Gen. T. Y. Danjuma at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

This is as the President same Monday charged Governors to work closely with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, to engender better harmony in the daunting task of checking the pandemic.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agenda of the meeting between the president and Danjuma, whose last visit to the State House was over three years ago, was unknown.

The visiting elder statesman, a one time Minister of Defence, also did not speak to State House correspondents on the outcome of his meeting with the president.

NAN, however, gathered that the president and Danjuma, who has been a harsh critic of the Buhari presidency and whose home state, Taraba, has been a hot-bed of herdsmen/farmers clashes, may have deliberated on domestic and sub-regional issues bordering on security and socio-economic development in the country.

NAN reports that the president also met with the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio.

Akpabio also declined comment on the outcome of his meeting with the president.

COVID-19: PRESIDENT BUHARI URGES GOVERNORS TO WORK CLOSELY WITH PTF
The President gave his charge to the governors during an online meeting Monday with the Governors’ Forum disclosing that the PTF had briefed him on next steps in the national response to the pandemic, “and I have directed that they work very closely with the Governors.”
President Buhari said the pandemic was “beyond technology, power, and resources,” noting that countries that had all those, were recording highest casualties round the world.
“We have to be very careful. We need to continue to educate and persuade the people to accept the reality of the situation, and do all that is necessary to stay safe,” the President said.
The meeting also discussed economic and security issues, among others, with the Governors commending the President on the “leadership and direction” he has given the country in combating COVID-19.
