Trafficked girls rescued in Ghana return to Nigeria this week – Dabiri-Erewa, NiDCOM boss

The Chairman/CEO Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said that the ten mostly teenage girls who were rescued from the hands of their trafficker in Ghana are now in safe hands and would be returned to Nigerian soon.
A video showing the girls, eight of who are from Imo State while two are from Plateau State went viral with condemnations trailing the inhuman treatment that was meted out to them by their trafficker who had turned them to prostitutes though he had promised them that they were going to Ghana to work as “sales girls.”
Hon. Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media and Public Relations, NIDCOM, Abuja, thanked Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, Ghana Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) and the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, for the safe custody of the girls, and for ensuring that they are well taken care of.
She noted, however, that once back in the country, the girls would be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which is responsible for rehabilitation, resettlement and reintegration of such rescued and returned persons.
The NiDCOM boss also expressed concern that “while these girls are being rescued, more are probably still being trafficked, noting  that traffickers need to be arrested, named and shamed.”
