When Professor Mrs. Christie Achebe was given a special 90th birthday treat in USA

For Professor Mrs. Christie Chinwe Achebe, the accomplished Matriarch of the celebrated Chinua Achebe family of Ogidi in Anambra State, Saturday, August 2, 2025 was extra special.
On that historic day, Professor Mrs. Achebe’s children, grandchildren, extended family members, friends and associates from far and near came together in the United States of America (USA) to celebrate her grand entry into the exclusive club of nonagenarians.
It was a day of great joy for the wife of a literary colossus, mother of four distinguished professionals, a dotting grandmother, and renowned academic in her own rights. It was also a memorable day of merriment for all who came physically to rejoice with her and the family on the attainment of the milestone age of 90.
Many from across the world also sent goodwill messages and birthday greetings to the great woman who has kept the flag of the family flying high since the home going of her internationally acclaimed husband, Professor Chinua Achebe.
If many were to judge by her nimble and stately dance steps when the timeless vibes of “Get down on it” started playing, they would find it difficult to accept that the regal dame on the dance floor was celebrating 90!
Internationally acclaimed film star and producer, Idris Elba, who is going to be playing the lead role of Okonkwo, in the adaptation of Achebe’s iconic novel, Things Fall Apart; Kate Sekules and Scott Moyers, President and Publisher, Penguin books and Mark Ettinger, President of Food Rescue Institute and his wife, Dr. Elyse Park, Harvard University Professor of Psychiatry, joined to make the birthday celebration truly extra special.
Also present were Robie Kakonge, Ugandan Ambassador to the United States, Tijan Sallah, a retired world banker and poet from The Gambia, Dr Ebie Okara – son of the late Nigerian novelist, Gabriel Okara, and his lovely wife, and several other dignitaries, all of who had a great time at the celebration of a lady who has become a globally celebrated institution in her own right.
