7 Div. Nigerian Army inaugurates Court Marshal in Theater Command

In its moves to instill discipline in the profession, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army has inaugurated a General Court Marshal to try some officers and soldiers within the Operation Lafiya Dole theater command.

While convening the General Court Marshal, the Acting General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu said the Court was set up to try offences committed by personnel within the theater of the Operation.

General Ezugwu said “as you are all aware, discipline is the bedrock of the military profession and to have disciplined body of officers and men, there must be justice because it is when there is justice that discipline can be achieved”

The GOC said the court is going to try 16 soldiers and four officers for various offences ranging from selling of arms and murder and called on prosecutors and defendants not to delay the cases, as justice delayed is justice denied.

He also enjoined the court members to operate within the ambit of the Nigerian constitution, military rules and evidence act. He said, “to the accused persons, I want to state that your right to fair hearing and other fundamental human rights will be adhered to throughout the trail. The Nigerian Army through his action wants to assured the nation and international community that we shall not condone cases of violation of laws of armed conflict in the discharge of our constitutional responsibilities.”

The President of the Court Marshal, Brigadier General Olusegun Adeniyi who is also the 37 Artillery Brigade Commander said “you the accused persons have nothing to fear because it is an open court guided by the constitution and other legal instruments. We will ensure that we give fair hearing and justice must be done”

He said the accused persons will be defended by legal practitioners, as they cannot defend themselves directly and called on prosecutors and defendants not to cause unnecessary delays by unnecessary adjournments.
