Inter Milan’s second-choice goalkeeper, Josep Martinez, was involved in a tragic road accident on Tuesday morning that led to the death of an 81-year-old man near the club’s training ground.
According to reports from Italian news agency ANSA, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Provincial Road 32 in Fenegrò (Como). The Spanish goalkeeper reportedly struck the elderly man, who was travelling in an electric wheelchair, while driving near the training facility.
Emergency services, including local police, ambulance personnel, and a rescue helicopter, arrived promptly at the scene. However, despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after the collision.
Preliminary findings suggest that the victim may have suddenly changed direction while crossing the road, which could have caused confusion and led to the accident.
Martinez, visibly shaken, stopped immediately to offer assistance and has since expressed his condolences to the victim’s family. The 26-year-old goalkeeper has also pledged full cooperation with authorities as investigations continue.
Local police have opened an inquiry to establish the exact circumstances of the crash. Inter Milan are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
