AFCON qualifiers: Rwanda beats Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a surprising 2-1 loss to Rwanda in Uyo, ending their AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign on a disappointing note. Despite already securing their place in the tournament, the team struggled to perform.

The first half was slow for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles lacking urgency. Moses Simon created a good chance for Kelechi Iheanacho just before halftime, but the Rwandan goalkeeper made a strong save to keep the score at 0-0. Coach Augustine Eguavoen made eight changes to the squad, giving players like Alhassan Yusuf, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Victor Boniface starting roles, but they could not make a big impact.

Eguavoen brought on Samuel Chukwueze and Frank Onyeka early in the second half to change the game. Chukwueze made an immediate impact, scoring a fantastic solo goal in the 59th minute after dribbling past three defenders. However, Rwanda quickly responded. A well-taken free kick in the 72nd minute leveled the match, and three minutes later, a deflected shot gave the visitors the lead.

The result raises concerns about the Super Eagles’ readiness for future competitions. While their qualification for AFCON 2025 is secure, this performance highlights the need for improvement as the team prepares for tougher challenges ahead.
