Late President Moise

Assassinated President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, was considered very popular among the masses of Haiti who saw him as the answer to many of the problems of their country.

Moise is said to have committed himself to the provision of infrastructures, including electricity, roads, water etc, especially in the hinterlands, and was tackling the hydra-headed problem of corruption in the country, especially among the political and business elite before his assassination by mostly foreign mercenaries strongly believed to have been aided by highly placed insiders.

Moise’ growing popularity among the masses and his crackdown on the political and business elite of Haiti and their foreign collaborators, most of who were said to be feeding fat on the lean resources of the beautiful but beleaguered nation of about 11 million people, are believed to have been part of the reason for what many believe was an international conspiracy to oust him from power which resulted in his assassination.

He was said to have been recovering monies and channeling them to the building of schools, roads, and provision of electricity and other amenities, all of which had been lacking before he came to power in 2017.

Those whose sources of easy money and corruptly acquired funds were being blocked by Moise, including some top government functionaries, are believed to have conspired with the foreign mercenaries who stormed his residence and eliminated him.

Some members of another school of thought have accused Moise of high-handedness and anti-democratic practices, which they, however, insist, should not have warranted his brutal assassination.

Haiti, which is still battling the devastating effects of earthquake, food shortages, gang violence, leadership crisis, a public health crisis driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties in delivering essential international aid, among others, is now strongly believed to be on the brink of war.

While investigations are still ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the assassination of Moise, the tussle for power continues, especially between Claude Joseph, who is now acting prime minister of Haiti, recognised as such by the President Joe Biden administration of the US and Ariel Henry, a neurosurgeon, appointed prime minister by Moïse the day before he was killed.

It is difficult to see how the truth, of who actually was behind the assassination of Moise and why, can come out of an investigation supervised by the acting prime minister who was literally, already, ousted by Moise just before his assassination and who, some believe, has questions to answer concerning the events surrounding the killing of Moise.

There are also fears that the foreign interests involved in the elimination of Moise would not allow the truth to see the light of the day since their hidden agenda will not be best served by such exposure. They will do everything, analysts say, to ensure that the truth is not told.

Some Haitians believe that the aim of the conspiracy to eliminate Moise is to ensure that Haiti remains a grazing ground for corrupt and rapacious foreign interests and their local collaborators with the ordinary people of the country being the worst for it.

A country that is potentially rich, many commentators say, has as a result of the activities of these foreign and local  interests, remained poor and heavily dependent on foreign aid.

The first black nation to become free of their colonial masters, Haiti, they say, has as a result of international conspiracy with support of local collaborators, remained in neo-colonial chains, struggling to feed its people, held down by diseases, especially the COVID-19 pandemic and lacking basic amenities.

The Biden administration, Thursday, said that it would help the Haitian National Police to investigate the assassination of President Moïse and emphasised the need for democratic elections to be held in the country this year.

How this US intervention in the saga will help Haiti overcome its many crises is yet to be seen, but the eyes of the world are now fixed on the Caribbean island nation that is again battling to stand on its feet.
