Journalists, CSOs appeal for adequate policies for prevention of malnutrition in Gombe

Journalists and Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) in Gombe have called on the Gombe State Government to adopt adequate policies for the prevention and management of severe acute malnutrition in the State.

The appeal is contained in a communique issued at the end of a one day meeting between Journalists and CSOs held in Gombe and organized by international Society of Media in Public Health.
According to the statement, Government at all levels must show more commitment and political will for the prevention and management of Severe Acute Malnutrition in Gombe state.
The communique which was signed and made available to newsmen by Placidus Peters, representing the CSOs as well as Comfort Mukollo and Williams Attah from the media side equally called on the Gombe State Government to increase funding for Child Health/Nutrition in the State.
The Journalists and CSOs who also appealed to the Gombe State Government for the immediate release of the 9.8 per cent sum of the 2019 Gombe State Health Sector budget advised Government to strengthen established systems to increase ‘ accountability of fund released for malnutrition.
On their part, the Journalists and the CSOs promised to intensify advocacy campaign for the establishment of Gombe State Health Insurance Scheme and inclusion of Severe Acute Malnutrition, give prominence to stories concerning malnutrition as well as create special programmes on malnutrition on radio and television.
Over the years, there has been growing concern about the danger Severe Acute
Malnutrition (SAM) poses to the health of children in Nigeria and its negative effects on the future of the country.
It is for this reason that fifteen organizations comprising Media and CSOs held the meeting on the Prevention and Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in Nigeria to reaffirm their commitment to the health and healthy living of every Nigeria citizen particularly child health as a panacea for sustainable development for the country.
