The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has secured the conviction of one Nura Musa for dealing in counterfeit currency.

The 30-year-old convict was arraigned before Justice M.G. Umar of Federal High Court, sitting in Bauchi, Bauchi State on July 3, 2014 on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and currency counterfeiting.

He was arrested by officers of the Department of State Services, DSS, at Jahun Quarters in Bauchi State, while trying to purchase sachets of Bournvita from a provision store with a fake N1, 000 note.

The convict was, thereafter, handed to the EFCC for further investigations.

Investigation by EFCC revealed that Musa and one Usman( now at large) had conspired to utter the Naira note.

Count two of the charges reads: ‘‘That you, “Nura Musa on or about the 12th day of December, 2013 at Bauchi, Bauchi State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did utter one piece of counterfeit 1000 Naira denomination, having purchased 3 sachets of Bournvita along Dutsen Tanshi Bauchi, Bauchi State knowing it to be counterfeit and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 6 (2) (b) and 5(1) (a) of the counterfeit currency (special provisions) Act Cap. C35.’’

While delivering his judgment, Justice Umar found the accused person guilty on both counts and sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment.

The sentences are to run concurrently, starting from when he was arrested on December 12, 2013.
