The Falconets of Nigeria have secured their place in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Burundi in the final qualifying round. In the second leg, played on Saturday, January 20, 2024, the Nigerian team secured a 1-0 win, with Esther Ajakaye scoring the decisive goal in the 79th minute.
This qualification makes Nigeria the first African team to earn a spot at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The Falconets, coached by Christopher Danjuma, showcased their dominance throughout the qualification stages.
Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, the Falconets, have now qualified for a record-extending 11th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. They join an exclusive list of countries, including the United States, Brazil, and Germany, that have participated in all editions of the tournament.
On their journey to the 2024 World Cup, Nigeria received a bye in the first qualifying round and advanced effortlessly in the second round after Mauritius withdrew. In the third qualifying round, the Falconets defeated Tanzania 3-2 on aggregate before securing a spot in the World Cup by overcoming Burundi.
The 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be hosted by Colombia from August 31 to September 22, 2024. The tournament will feature 24 teams, with Europe contributing the highest number of participating teams – five teams.
