Senator Adams Oshiomhole jokingly accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of breaking an agreement they had made to stop teasing each other over past controversies.
The light-hearted exchange took place during Thursday’s Senate plenary after Akpabio made a comment that reminded lawmakers of an old controversy involving Oshiomhole.
Raising a point of order, Oshiomhole said both of them had agreed to end their friendly jokes, but Akpabio had broken the truce.
“The Senate President and I signed a truce of no more hostilities, but he has breached the agreement,” Oshiomhole said, drawing laughter from fellow senators.
He added that he would not take the matter further and jokingly asked the Senate President to “protect vertically challenged people in the Senate.”
Akpabio immediately apologised, saying he did not mean to offend Oshiomhole. He explained that his remark was made while responding to another senator during a debate.
The Senate President assured Oshiomhole that he would not bring up past controversies again.
“Sorry, we have a truce. No more hostilities. Agreement is agreement,” Akpabio said.
He described Oshiomhole as his brother, friend and former colleague as governor, adding that he held him in high regard.
Akpabio ended the exchange with another joke, saying he would not behave like countries that sign agreements and later break them, a comment that again drew laughter from the Senate chamber.
