The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has restated his commitment to ensuring security in the state.
He made this known when he received the new Commissioner of Police (CP); Mr. Musa Kimo who paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Port-Harcourt.
“You cannot talk about infrastructural development if there is no security; the citizenry will be hindered from going about their daily businesses. For example, a road contractor who is harassed daily by armed robbers and kidnappers would run away and abandon the project. At the end of the day, there is no infrastructural development. Security is a key priority in my administration, because, when a place is secured other good things would follow,” the Governor said.
Governor Wike said that insecurity hinders good governance and ultimately affects the economy because investors will do not business in an unsafe environment.
The State Chief Executive emphasized that his administration has always made it a point of duty to support any security agency- especially the Nigerian Police, because they have the primary responsibility of protecting lives and property in every state of the country.
The Governor maintained that electoral campaigns are over and it is now time for governance which is ensuring the dividends of democracy gets to the people.
He said that his administration has a good record of supporting and cooperating with security agencies such as the Navy, Army, Air force and others because working with them is critical for good governance.
The Governor who enjoined the CP to sustain the work tempo and maintain the relationship his immediate past predecessor had with his administration, said he would give him all the necessary support to do his job effectively and efficiently.
Speaking earlier, Mr. Musa Kimo, the new Commissioner of Police, said he had been monitoring Governor Wike’s activities and achievements since he resumed office in Rivers State Police Command.
“You are doing well for this state, but without tranquillity you may not be able to achieve much and of course, that is where we come in. I am here with this forest of officers to partner with you in your quest to make life more meaningful for the people of Rivers State in terms of protecting their lives and property. I want to assure you to count on me and my officers. I appreciate the assistance you have been rendering to the Rivers State Police Command as briefed by my colleagues we hope that you continue. We shall continue to abide in you and we hope that you abide in us”, the CP promised.
