Nigeria has felicitated the government and people of The Gambia on the occasion of the country’s 60th independence anniversary.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, made this known in a congratulatory message to the government and people of the country in Abuja on Tuesday.
Tuggar in the statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the acting spokesperson of the ministry, said The Gambia had demonstrated remarkable progress and resilience since getting her independence 60 years ago.
He described the relationship between Nigeria and The Gambia as one of mutual interest, adding that more would be done to deepen the existing ties between the two countries.
“I extend warmest congratulations to Dr Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, on the joyous occasion of The Gambia’s independence anniversary.
“As you commemorate this significant milestone in your nation’s history, we celebrate with you the remarkable progress and resilience that The Gambia has demonstrated over the years.
“Nigeria and The Gambia share a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect, shared values, and a common vision for a prosperous and united Africa,” he said.
Tuggar said Nigeria was committed to strengthening ties with The Gambia, while collaborating closely with her on regional and global issues for the benefit of the people of the two countries.
“Therefore, on this special day, we reaffirm our solidarity with the government and people of The Gambia, and look forward to deepening our bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” he said.
The minister further wished the government and people of The Gambia peace, prosperity, progress, and reassured them of Nigeria’s continuing friendship and support.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that The Gambia’s independence anniversary is celebrated to commemorate the end of British colonial rule and the country’s assumption of independence on Feb. 18, 1965.
