U-20 AFCON Semi-final: Nigeria’s Flying Eagles bow to Gambia

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a 0-1 loss to Gambia in the Semi-final of the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, Monday.

Adama Bojang benefitted from a slack defending by the Nigerian defence to fire Gambia ahead in the 7th minute of play.

The Coach Ladan Bosso tutored Flying Eagles did mount pressure on the Young Scorpions in search of an equalizer, with the Eagles dominating possession but failing to breach the perfect Gambian defence.

With 21 goal attempts, Nigeria were duly awarded a chance to draw level via a penalty in the 86th minute but substitute Adamu Abdullahi missed the penalty kick.

Gambia were reduced to ten-men in the final minutes of play but held on to seal their first ever Africa U-20 Cup of Nations final place with a 1-0 win.

Gambia will face Senegal in the final game after the Young Terenga Lions defeated Tunisia 3-0 in the first semifinal game decided at the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt.

Nigeria and Tunisia will battle for the third-place medal. All four Semi-finalists will represent Africa at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.
