LMD Foundation awards Scholarships to 40 students, grants to 33 women

The Lateefah Moyosore Durosinmi (LMD) Foundation has awarded scholarships to 40 pupils and students of Primary and Secondary school, while grants were given to 33 Women in Southwest State of Nigeria.

The Chairperson, Board of Trustees (BOT), LMD Foundation, Prof Fatimah AbdulKareem, made the disclosure in her welcome address at the 8th Award Ceremony held last Thursday at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Central Mosque, Ile-Ife.

AbdulKareem, who was represented by Dr Jade Mohammed, a Board of Trustee (BOT) member of the Foundation, thanked God for giving them the grace to award scholarships and empower people despite security and economic challenges across the country.

She said that additional awards were given to previous beneficiaries as part of Foundation’s economic empowerment scheme, adding that with latest awards, 245 students and 164 women had been supported.

According to her, the Foundation is funded by philanthropists and well-meaning Nigerians through donations and Zakaah and this has continued to sustain the programs of the Foundation.

Also, the Chairman of the occasion, Engr Bashir Awotorebo, Former Minister of Water and Mineral Resources, commended the LMD Foundation, for deeming it fit to assist the needy, not minding the economic downturn.

Awotorebo charged people to realise that they came to this world with nothing, and that nothing shall be taken away when leaving.

He urged all and sundry to seize any opportunity that comes their way to help others and appealed to LMDF to continue with the program, assuring that God will surely reward them.

The Guest Speaker, a Former Dean at Fountain University, Prof Shareefah Labo-Popoola, in her lecture, titled: ‘Islamic Perspectives of Human Well-Being’ applauded the LMD Foundation for impacting lives positively.

Labo-Popoola lamented that some Nigerians that are wealthy cannot give to the poor no matter how small.

She explained that many people need the support of others physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually, lamenting that majority who could render such support fail in their responsibility.

“No wonder some children commit suicide whenever they need to be encouraged and empowered by their parents emotionally especially when they fail.

“Let everyone stop blaming government but rise up to their responsibility to care for others, for government alone cannot do it” the Guest Speaker stated.

Labo-Popoola noted that some Muslim do not value paying their Zakaat, because of worldly things that cannot profit them, and assured that paying Zakaat gives hope to the hopeless.

“When all hands are on deck to empower the society, it eliminates social conflict, but otherwise increases the number of criminals in the society.

All parents should give both formal and informal education to their children, for “charity must begin at home,” she insisted.

In his remarks, LMDF Executive Council member, Prof Muheeb Durosinmi, congratulated the beneficiaries enjoined them to work hard, imbibe the spirit of excellence and be prudent with the little that have been given to them.

Prof Lateefa Durosinmi, who owns the Foundation, appreciated God, her husband, and the board of trustees, for their support and for the success achieved so far.

Durosinmi said that her achievements as Former President of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) led to the establishment of LMDF.

She also admonished the beneficiaries to utilise the materials given to them judiciously and ensure they also contribute to the growth and development of others.

One of the beneficiaries from Ondo State, Afolabi Lukman, appreciated the members of the board of trustees of the Foundation for their good gesture and promised that they’ll not disappoint them, but would reciprocate the good turn.
