Super Eagles and Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, has been suspended from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) over allegations of insider betting.
The league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, confirmed the decision in a letter to Plateau United on 5 August 2025.
According to the letter, Adeyinka’s registration has been put on hold while an investigation is carried out.
The suspension follows claims by Plateau United that Adeyinka refused to sign for another club after discovering a contract clause allowing immediate termination if he was found guilty of betting offences. The NPFL rules strictly prohibit players from engaging in any form of betting, with violations punishable under its disciplinary framework.
Owumi stated that the matter would be treated with “utmost seriousness” and warned that betting on matches a player is involved in “diminishes the integrity of the league and brings the game into disrepute.” Adeyinka will have the chance to defend himself as the investigation progresses.
The suspension comes as a blow to Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), who were reportedly close to signing the experienced goalkeeper ahead of the new NPFL season starting on 22 August. The former Kwara United shot-stopper, who has represented Nigeria at both youth and senior levels, had been tipped to bolster the Oluyole Warriors’ squad.
With Adeyinka sidelined, reports suggest Super Eagles goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke could now become 3SC’s main target.
